Information

Cutting-edge research on human epigenetic clocks reveals how diet and lifestyle choices can influence biological ageing by modulating DNA methylation patterns.

Higher body fat accelerates epigenetic ageing, while elevated blood carotenoid levels are linked to a slower ageing process.

Emerging evidence suggests that vitamin D, omega-3, and exercise may help delay ageing, but large-scale studies have been limited.

The recent DO-HEALTH trial (n=777) provides new insights: Omega-3 supplementation alone significantly slowed PhenoAge, GrimAge2, and DunedinPACE, while the combination of omega-3, vitamin D (2,000 IU/day), and a structured exercise program had an additive effect on PhenoAge, but not for the other second generation clocks.

These findings highlight the growing potential of nutrition and lifestyle interventions in modulating second-generation epigenetic clocks, opening doors to more targeted strategies for longevity and healthspan.

Session organised in collaboration with ESPM.

The European Society of Preventive Medicine (ESPM) focuses on prevention, healthy ageing and longevity science across the life course, working with multiple stakeholders at the intersection of basic research, clinical medicine, education and public health policy. ESPM is an Oxford based not-for-profit organization established to promote the implementation of prediction and prevention of age-related noncommunicable diseases and to facilitate research to advance the field of preventive, predictive, personalised and participatory medicine.
