Glucomannan is a dietary fibre derived from the root of the Konjac plant (Amorphophallus konjac), a perennial plant that grows in Southeast Asia and Africa. Glucomannan is a rich source of soluble fiber having beneficial effects on the digestive system and contains almost no calories. As a dietary supplement, glucomannan is officially used to treat obesity. It has an important physicochemical property such as water absorption. This property makes it swell up in the stomach, thus making us feel full and satiated. It is a type of non-ionic hydrocolloidal dietary fiber and consists of D-mannose and D-glucose linked by β-1, 4 glycosidic bonds in a molar ratio of 1:1.6-1:1.4.
