Perilla Seed Oil

Perilla seed oil (PRO) is extracted from premium perilla seeds (Perilla frutescens L.). Native to East Asia, including regions of China, Japan, and Korea, the perilla plant has been valued for centuries in traditional medicine and culinary practices. Historically, perilla leaves and seeds were used in Chinese herbal remedies and as a flavor enhancer in Asian cuisine. Today, perilla is cultivated globally, with major production centers in China, South Korea, and Southeast Asia. PSO is a rich source of omega-3 Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA), a polyunsaturated fatty acid composed of 18 carbon atoms and three double bonds. ALA accounts for approximately 60-70% of the perilla oil’s fatty acid profile, making it one of the highest plant-based sources of this essential nutrient. ALA is a rare component in most living organisms and is primarily found in select plants such as perilla, flaxseed and chia.
